Parish notes

Duncan earl of Marr 1222 x 1228 - 1242 x 1244: gives to God and St Mary of Munimusc and to the canons serving God there .. church of St Andrew of Kindrouch [= Braemar] etc. Cowan 1967, 111 dates this 1214x1234. Apparently in exchange for church of Logie (see PSAS lix p.41 and note 6). See also Abdn. Reg. i p.16.'...the church was granted to Monymusk by Gilchrist e. of Mar and confirmed to the priory by John bp. of Aberdeen (1199x1207) (St A. Lib. 372, 374-5)' Cowan 1967, 137. But I can find no reference to Logie-Mar (Logie-Ruthven) in St A. Lib. 372; however, ibid. 374 bp. John confirms e. Gilchrist's grants to Monimusk i.a. the church of Ruchauen [or Ruthauen] with its lands and pertinents. Assuming that this is Logie Mar, it did not remain with Monimusk, since 1239x41 the church of Logymar or Logyrothman in Mar was granted to Aberdeen cathedral by Duncan e. of Marr (Abdn. Reg. i 16). It had a dependent chapel in Glenbuchat, which became a parish kirk in 1470 - see Glenbuchat GLB. The dedication to St Wallach/Volocus (Abdn. Brev.) is problematical. It is first mentioned in Abdn. Brev. f.xlv (29 January) states that churches of Tunmeth (= Dumeath GLS DM) and 'Logy in Mar' are dedicated to him. However, this latter dedicatiion may have arisen through the confusion with Logie-Walloch (or Logie Atheron), now Logie STL. See also A.B. Coll. i 632 & note. Logie-Mar and Coldstone parishes were united in 1618 (Fasti 103).
