According to OS Name Book (1871), 'St Catherine's Well was filled in long ago, but is said to have had healing properties. Traditionally a nunnery dedicated to St Catherine of Sienna stood here, but there are no traces nor any records.' There may therefore be some doubt as to whether the nunnery existed and, by implication, the meaning of the name of the well. Name Book 1871.
