Class I Pictish stone at site suggests antiquity; the site is at the bottom of Navidale. If Watson (1926, 250) is right, Navidale contains G nemed 'sanctuary etc.', and the name signifies that there was a church/chapel/sanctuary here before the Norse arrived, which they recognised and used to name the glen or 'dalr'.
