Notes

NMRS records that it fell into disrepair after the union of Lhanbryde with St Andrews in 1780. [Canmore ID: 16523] It is not certain that the name contains Brigid, Bride, though scholars have assumed this to be the case (Watson 1926, 274). The early forms of the name may suggest the personal name Maelbrigte as the specific element. This may mean that the name 'St Bridget's Church' (1843 and thereafter) is a mistaken modern interpretation of the original name, rather than a reflection of a genuine tradition.
