Notes

This is a rag well, according to the OS Name Book, called after a chapel in the neighbourhood dedicated to St Mary. A circular stone building encloses the well (1878) and people come here for cures, attaching rags and threads to surrounding trees (NMRS). The use of the name Ladywell to refer to this well is implicit in the name of the nearby settlement of Ladywell, Inverness & Bona (q.v.)
