NGR for St Nicholas's Church (in ruins). The romanesque church was circular in plan, modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, 'through Scandinavian prototypes', dateable 1090 x 1160 (NMRS).

It was united to Stenness by 1544 and to Firth by c.1551 (Cowan 1967, 160). At the Reformation the kirk of 'Orpher, Firth and Stanehous lyand within six mylis neidis ane minister'. But Orphir would later recover its independent parochial existence.
