This church served as the parish church of Forfar until 1591. In 1161 x 1162 Malcolm IV confirmed to Jedburgh Abbey the church of St Peter of Restenneth (Ecclesiam Sancti Petri de Rostinoth) with everything which his predecessors had given and granted to that church (RRS i no. 195)
