Notes

NGR for the medieval parish church of St Vigeans. Arbroath Abbey stood in this parish, and Arbroath became a distinct parish after the Reformation (Cowan 1967, 178). Arbroath remained a distinct parish in the mid-nineteenth century (OS 6 inch 1st edn), with St Vigeans appearing beside it (including a detached part around Hospitalfield, the site of the hospital and chapel of St John). The parish in the nineteenth century had two detached parts: an area of 133 acres around the hospital and chapel of St John (Hospitalfield on OS 6 inch), and an area of 1108 acres at or near Inverpeffer (NO599377) (Shennan 1892, 44-5). In February 1251 an assise found that the lands of Inverpeffer customarily paid an annual rent (annuam firmam) to the abbot of Abroath, as well as rendering 'exercitum et auxilium' with the men of the said abbot.
