Notes

A spring still exists here, but without masonry. It was recorded in 1859 by OS surveyors as being 'bound with round rough stones and covered with a flagstone', but 'the farmer had it closed up as the numbers of people visiting it were damaging his crop' (NMRS). In 1794 a legend relating to the Nine Maidens was recorded: 'A dragon, which had devoured nine maidens ... was killed by a person called Martin' (OSA xiii, 100).
