Although built partially on the former site of St Leonard's Iron Works, the site takes its name from its situation off St Catherine's Road, which is in turn named from the late medieval St Catherine's Chapel and Hospital, along the site of which St Catherine's Road ran (by 1912 at latest, replacing the former name 'Claypots'). The 1860 25" Town Survey of Perth helpfully shows these hagiotoponyms in close proximity (as also to e.g. St John's Curling Pond).
