Notes

The remains of St Helen's Church stand 170 metres from the high-water mark on the shore. Originally a twelfth-century church, extensively rebuilt in the late fourteenth or fifteenth century, probably going out of use when this parish was united to that of Cockburnspath (NMRS). However, the presence of one complete hogback stone and part of another, suggests the existence of a rather earlier church here.
