Notes
This is a small island lying close to the NE of Eileach an Naoimh. The obsolete name, Coulbranden, apparently 'the retreat of (St) Brendan', may related to the legend of Brendan of Clonfert who is said in his legend to have established a church on the island of Ailech in Britain. This, however, might refer to Aleth (now in Saint Malo in Britanny), where his cult is also known to have flourished in connection with that of St Malo. There are very early ecclesiastical remains on neighbourinng Eileach an Naoimh. Coulbranden may be connected to this monastic or eremitic site.
