Around 1105 AD, Thor Longus wrote that he had built a church here in honour of St Cuthbert (in honorem Sancti Cuthberti fabricavi) and granted it to God and to St Cuthbert (i.e. to the monks of St Cuthbert at Durham) (ESC no. 24; see also nos. 33 and 34).
