Notes

According to OS 6 inch a tomb is on the site of the old church. This seems plausible. It is on a hill called Kirk Hill. NMRS records of this site, however: 'The original church of Carmichael, judging by a charter of Robert the Bruce to Sir James Douglas, stood considerably to the south-east of the present church. The names St Michael's Well and St Michael's Bog indicate the site of the original church' (citing A Murray and G V Irving 1864). In spite of these objections, there is no good reason to suggest another site for this kirk. The charter of Robert I mentioned above is presumably RMS i no. 77, which describes the marches of the 'terram et tenementum de Kirkmychel', the march including 'the burn on the east side of the church of Kirkmichael'. There is a burn to the east site of Kirk Hill, at the bottom of the hill, only 320 m away from the summit. There is no reason to reject this site on the basis of the charter.
