It was recorded circa 1724: 'In this town .... is held a great fair upon the first Tuesday of Septr. yearly, called Summer Eves Fair which is said to be the greatest of its kind in Scotland' (Geog. Coll. i, 89). Alexander II referred to Keith in a charter of 1214 as 'Kethmalruf', the name containing both the name of Keith and of its patron saint (Moray Reg. no. 25).
