The chapel existed in 1635, when it was recorded that the burgesses of S. Queensferry had erected 'a splendid and spacious temple' which was the 'capellania Sancti Michaelis', which was now to be erected as the parish kirk (RMS ix no. 339), as South Queensferry was being disjoined from Dalmeny parish.
