Notes

The possible presence of a kirk or chapel here is indicated by the place-name Kirkcudbright ('St Cuthbert's Church') At this site the lower courses of a building survive up to two feet high, though this was perhaps not an ecclesiastical building, while the farmer at Nether Kirkcudbright reports ploughing up 'vast quantities of bones' in the same field (NMRS). In spite of the OS Name Book's reference to this as a chapel of St Cuthbert, the OS 6 inch 1st edn describes it as the 'site of St Connel's Chapel'. Given the consistency of the name Kirkcudbright from centuries before OS 6 inch, and the Name Book's treatment of it as a chapel of St Cuthbert, we should probably regard the OS 6 inch as in error. It is worth noting, however, that RMS ii no. 3594 (1511) includes among a list of lands, many of which (but not all) are in the parish of Glencairn, and all of which are incorporated into the free earldom and barony of Glencairn, there is a place called 'Kirkconnell'.
