Notes
A long-lasting and lively cult is evidenced at the well. It was cleaned out around 1870, and several hundred coins were found, some dating back to the sixteenth century (RCAHMS). Since then further coins (and medals with image of BVM) have been placed in the well. Nearby is a 'cloutie-tree'. The well was 'held in great repute for the cure of diseases, particularly of women and children' (RCAHMS) OS Name Book records: 'This is a good spring upon the farm of Barbush and is still resorted to by the credulous. situate about 11 chains East of Picts Knowe' (OS1/20/70/115).
