The existence of a church/chapel of this name is not by any means certain, as the analysis of the name given by McQueen, cited by NMRS (see below)is itself uncertain. It may not actually contain Gaelic 'cill', and even if it does, the saint's name my not be Mo Chutu as suggested by McQueen. A hypocorism of Cuthbert is equally likely, for examnple, as suggested by H.E. Maxwell, Studies in the Topography of Galloway (Edinburgh 1887), 209. NMRS records (Canmore ID 60360): Killiemacuddican 'my little Cutu's church'. St Muchutu of Rathan and Lismore is said to have died in 637. J MacQueen 1973
