The minister of the parish refers in 1796 to the tradition: 'Ninian, the founder of the cathedral church of Whithern, and the first bishop of Galloway, is said to have occasionally inhabited a cave which is still shewn on the sea-shore of this parish, adjacent to the house of Physgill' (OSA xvii, 594).
