Notes
The church (and nominal parish) seems to have been created (by David I?) to support Andrew, bishop of Caithness, between c.1145 and 1152 (Dunf. Reg. no. 36; David I Chrs. no. 255). There is no evidence that it survived beyond the twelfth century. Malcolm IV granted it to Dunfermline Abbey the grant to take effect on the death of Bishop Andrew (who died in 1184). The church was confirmed to Dunfermline under these conditions in 1162 x 1164 (RRS i no. 229) It was confirmed to Dunfermline by Alexander II in 1227 and 1232(Dunf. Reg. no. 74 & 81). See also Dunf. Reg. nos. 236 (Papal confirmation of church of Holy Trinity and its lands to Dunfermline, which states that it was conceded by Andrew of Caithness with the assent of the king); Dunf. Reg. no. 272 (1234) (as 'ecclesiam de Dunkeld); Dunf. Reg. no. 434 (p. 322) in which James II confirms 'ecclesiam Sancte Trinitatis de Dunkelden' cum terris ad illam pertinentibus' (1450) - though how real this was by that time is hard to know. It may be that it had ceased to have any independent reality other than as a legal (and for Dunfermline Abbey a fiscal) one. It is likely that its identity was submerged with that of St Columba's Dunkeld by the end of the twelfth or in the early thirteenth century.

Parish notes
Note Cowan 1967 under Dunkeld-Holy Trinity & Dunkeld-St Columba, which former probably merged into latter in 13th c. (former last mentioned 1234). Rogers states that the situation of the parish of Dunkeld is rather obscure, quoting the OSA (xii, 316-17) that it was not extensive and that its bounds had never been defined properly, comprising only what had formerly been the city of Dunkeld. Rogers goes on to say that parochial service appears to have been conducted in the cathedral church, which succeeded the original St Columba’s. But the situation is further complicated by the existence of a further 12th c. church in Dunkeld dedicated to the Holy Trinity (1992, 389).
