Parish notes

Known also as Kyraem [presumably for *Kircem?] in Rhinns, the church was granted to Sweetheart Abbey by Devorgilla de Baliol, possibly on the abbey’s foundation in 1273. For more details see Cowan 1967, 119. Refs. Fraser Caerlaverock ii 417. CPL xiv. 192-3. MacQueen 1973, 20 says = Columba’s church’, adding that ‘St Columba’s Well is 3 miles distant’ [from the church presumably] + McColm a fairly frequent surname in the area. MacQueen sticks to this in 2002, 50. BUT the 1525 and 1602 forms call this into question (parochia ecclesie de Kirkcum 1525 RMS iii no. 322; parochia de Kirkcum 1602 RMS vi no. 1358). . SEE ALSO Brooke 1994, 75 & endnote at 192, where she states that it is dedicated to Cumméne. Ó Muraíle 1997 iv nos. 20 & 41. Watson 1926, 165 expresses some doubt, but mentions the well. NOT in Redford 1988.
