Ernán of Midluachair
Introduction
In MG gloss he is from ‘Midhluachra icCill na saccart’. At the ecclesiastical site at Kilnasaggart in Co. Armagh there is a pillar-stone bearing the following inscription: In loc so tanimmairni Ernohc mac Ceran bic er cul Peter apstel – ‘this place thy Ernóc son of Cérán the Little bequeathed it under the protection of Apostle Peter’ (Mart. G, 300.) Ernán mac Ciaráin is not visible in the martyrologies but he is present in the genealogies, while Ernán of Midluachair is in the former (though not in Mart. T) but absent from the latter. cf Ternóc m. Ciarán. The only other ref to Midlúachair in the martyrologies is in relation to the famous highwayman Glunsalach, who in the genealogies is related to Ernán mac Ciaráin (Mart. Do June 3; Rec. Met. 662.212) Ó Riain combines this saint, Ternóc m. Ciarán qv and Marnock of Kilmarnock qv (Ó Riain, Dictionary, 453)
