Ciarán m. Luaigne of Saigir
Other names
Ciarán of Saigir
Introduction
He is presented as both contemporary of Patrick (Mart. O notes in RB512) and Ciarán m Beoáid (Mart. Do.). He is a bishop, and senior of the saints of Ireland - sinnser nóem Erenn (FO notes in RB512). His pre-Patrician status belongs ‘in the realm of propaganda’, and his assimilation to the cult of the Cornish saint Perran is similarly groundless (Ó Riain, Dictionary, 172-3). His popularity on the Continent may have been due to conflation with this St Perran (ibid).

No particular grounds are given for merging the two most famous Ciaráns, but Ó Riain notes that of the twenty saints of this name in the Irish record, 'some, if not all of those named Ciarán probably represented localizations of a single original cult' (Ó Riain, Dictionary, 168)
