Introduction

Although a cult exists also of St James the Less (also an apostle), most commemorations unless otherwise indicated cam be assumed to relate to James the Great. His cult in Compostela already was strong before 1000, but his popularity seems to have risen in the 12th and 13th centuries, with the expansion of pilgrimage to Compostela, and the linkage of James's legends to themes of the Crusades.
